Microsoft Thermal Energy Center (TEC) [WINNER]
Category
Judges' Innovation Award
Description
The Microsoft Thermal Energy Center (TEC) has 7 65-foot-tall thermal energy tanks served by 900 geothermal wells drilled 550 feet into the ground. Through a system of heat pumps, electric
chillers, and 220 miles of pipe, the TEC uses constant temperatures below the Earth’s surface to heat and cool office buildings on our new campus, eliminating the need for conventional gas boilers and electric chillers, cutting energy use by ~50% compared to traditional utility plants.
