WINNER: Allen Institute
Category
Technology/Life Science Development of the Year
Description
At the confluence of architecture and science, technology and craftsmanship, historic memory and future promise, lies the Allen Institute – an elegant, six-story, 272,000 square foot research facility. It is designed to embody the Institute’s guiding principles: team science, big science, and open science. Labs and offices fan out from the large, light-filled atrium as a series of “petals,” maximizing daylight and views while visually connecting the building’s activities. The facility houses dry and wet labs, data and education centers, an electron microscopy area, and a public plaza with an interactive art installation. The modern structure integrates the meticulously reconstructed terracotta façade of the two historically-designated automobile showrooms that formerly resided on the site. The integrated project team leveraged BIM and Lean principles to resolve challenges and meet the developer’s goals for preservation and sustainability. It is Certified Salmon-Safe and targeting LEED Gold.
