Description
Google’s goal for this 90,000-square-foot floor plate building was to help employees feel connected to the environment while working. In response, the design team developed a biophilic space plan with four distinct neighborhoods inspired by northwest ecosystems: Sound, Valley, Forest and Mountain. Connecting each neighborhood is the “railway,” a continuous ribbon of wood that leads employees through this multi-sensory experience. The build-out includes traditional desks, formal and informal small and large meeting spaces, a “tech-talk” lecture hall, and a full-fledged suite of amenities featuring micro-kitchens, a full-service canteen, active recreation and fitness areas, and relaxation areas including massage suites. A highly efficient HVAC system including a zoned chilled beam system for temperature control is complemented by daylighting from two massive skylights with automated controls for targeted penetration. Materials include wood reclaimed from cleanup of the brownfield site, non-toxic finishes and many high recycled-content products.
